Hawks plan to run more with speedy Teague in control

Before last season the Hawks said they wanted to run the fast break more often. It was easy to see why.

Atlanta had fast, athletic players at every position, notably forward Josh Smith. And yet the Hawks finished last season ranked just 11th out of 15 Eastern Conference teams in the percentage of possessions used (shot, free throw or turnover) in transition, according to Synergy Sports Technology.

The Hawks return nearly all of those same athletic players and are again planning to run more.

That’s where Jeff Teague comes in.

“It’s perfect for me,” Teague said. “That

ROUNDUP: Stow boys basketball gets best of Green

STOW, Ohio – Trailing by a point entering the second half, the Stow-Munroe Falls Bulldogs pulled ahead of – and then ran away from – the visiting Green Bulldogs for a 58-43 victory in the two schools annual season-opening rivalry game.

The win was Stow’s second straight over Green, including a lopsided win in the Copley Division I District championship game last March.

“Our guys, in the second half, did a nice job when they started to extend their defense and go for some steals of moving the ball around and finding guys cutting to the basket,” Stow coach Dave Close said.

It was senior guards Kyle Scelza and David Walker that did most of the damage for Stow.  Scelza (18 points) scored nine points in the third quarter, including a bucket which gave the home team the lead for good at 29-28.

It also ignited a 15-2 Stow run and lifted Closes team to a 40-28 lead entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, it was Walker that put Green away with 11 of his 20 game-high points.

Green freshman sharpshooter Austin Marciniak burst on the scene to lead the Bulldogs with a team-high 15 points on five 3-pointers, three of which came in the second quarter.

It was a game of runs as Green began the game up 7-2, but then Stow scored the next 14 points to close out the first quarter.  Green then went on a 14-5 run capped by a Marciniak triple to tie the game 21-21.

Coming out of halftime Scelza and Green senior Andrew Pratt traded buckets before Stow went on a 13-0 run to end the third period with Stow up 40-28.  Stow had a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
